Cameras
The HP Elite x2 incorporates three cameras connected via MIPI CSI-2 to an Intel IPU3 (CIO2) imaging processor and managed by a Texas Instruments TPS68470 PMIC:
- Front RGB camera
- OmniVision OV5670 (5 MP) on CSI-2 Port 1
- Rear RGB camera
- OmniVision OV8858 (8 MP) on CSI-2 Port 0
- Near-Infrared (NIR) camera
- OmniVision OV7251 (640x480) on CSI-2 Port 2
- IR illuminator
- TPS68470 WLED2 driven at 97.5 mA
Mainline kernels do not initialize all three sensors simultaneously due to Intel IPU3 single-DMA receiver limits and PMIC sequencing. A DKMS package and on-demand V4L2 bridge are provided in hp-elite-x2-1012-g2-cameras.
Driver installation
Install dkms, v4l2loopback-dkms, v4l-utils in addition to the base-devel and git packages.
Clone the repository and run the automated installer:
$ git clone https://github.com/ckomma/hp-elite-x2-1012-g2-cameras.git $ cd hp-elite-x2-1012-g2-cameras # ./install.sh
The installer performs the following:
- Installs
hp-camera-unifiedto DKMS, ensuring automated module compilation on future kernel upgrades. - Configures WirePlumber rules to isolate the loopback device, guaranteeing the front RGB camera defaults in desktop apps (Snapshot, Cheese, Zoom) while preserving rear camera toggling.
- Starts
hp-ir-feeder.service, which listens via inotify to only power up the IR camera and WLED2 illuminator when an authentication request occurs.
Howdy
Howdy needs specific configuration:
/etc/howdy/config.ini
[video] device_path = /dev/video20 dark_threshold = 95 use_cnn = true [debug] end_report = false
dark_threshold to 95 is essential. In dark rooms, background darkness causes frames to exceed Howdy's default 60% threshold, leading to false "Face detection image too dark" rejections.Authentication operates in total darkness using the active TPS68470 WLED2 infrared emitter.
